The Hampta Pass trek is tailor-made for those who want to experience the higher Himalayas in its true glory. It is a trek that comes with built-in bonuses. It has all that an adventure lover would want; dark pine forests, open meadows, glaciers, valleys and an adventurous pass that leaves the heart pumping. Unlike most treks, you start your trek from Manali town; before embarking on a day long trip to Chandratal, a high altitude alpine lake and finally adding to this will be the return jeep ride over the Rothang pass. It is almost like experiencing two treks at one go.

Day 1: Arrival - Mangli

We arrive at Manali in the morning. After breakfast, we drive to Jobra from where our trek begins. Our first pit-stop where overnight stay occurs is in Cheeka. The trail to Cheeka passes through Pine and Maple forests and enters a lush green meadow strewn with small rocks. It’s almost a 2 hour trek.

Day 2: Cheeka to Balu Ka Gera

We start the trek to Balu ka Gera after breakfast and it is an easy 4 hour ascent with the trail staying along the banks of the river for most part of the day. The initial climb involves a lot of boulder-hopping. We walk along the Rani River into a valley dotted with tiny multi-coloured flowers until we reach Balu Ka Gera. Balu Ka Gera is a level ground made up of sand and dust brought down by the river. Here we will pitch our tents and camp at Balu Ka Gera (3350m; 11000ft).

In the evening, we pitch tents on the banks of Zanskar. A few warm up exercises are done to keep ourselves warm.  As the sun sets, it drags the temperature down with it, and we tuck into our sleeping bags to start our trek the next day

Day 3: Balu Ka Gera to Shea Goru via Hampta Pass

The trail from Balu Ka Gera to Shea Goru is moderately steep with a final sharp descent. We move along the river which is lined by pink and yellow flowers. It’s a site worth savouring. There are two steep climbs over ridges before you reach Hampta pass. At 4267m (14,000ft), Hampta Pass is pretty windy and sudden rains or snow also cannot be ruled out. The descent to Shea Goru from the pass is slightly tricky. Some even prefer Sliding down the snow which has its own perks of fun. We will reach Shea Goru in about 2 hours and camp overnight beside the river in Shea Goru.

Day 4: Shea Goru to Chatru

The first part of the trek on this day it is a gentle downhill walk to Chatru, with a few tricky sections. The trail continues along the river, and there are three huge glacial flows down the mountain side. We camp at Chatru beside the many streams that flow through the meadows. Chatru is a beautiful camping spot with beautiful mountain views. It will take you about 4-5 hours to reach Chatru from Shea Goru.

There are two camping options; we can stay at Chatru or alternatively, after lunch, we drive from Chatru to Chandratal, a beautiful moon shaped lake. It is around 70km from chatru and we can also camp near the lake.
